Coffin Bank

Coffin Bank was the first bank established in Batavia, built in 1856 by a college teacher, William Coffin, next door to his home at 528 South Batavia Avenue. Coffin purchased the home from his father-in-law, Judge Samuel D. Lockwood, whose primary residence was just down the street, at 825 South Batavia Avenue. In 1880, Mr. Coffin sold his bank to E.H. Gammon and Don Carlos Newton. Early in the 20th Century, Coffin Bank combined with the VanNortwick family’s bank, founded in 1891, to become the First National Bank of Batavia–commonly referred to locally as Batavia National Bank.
