John Van Nortwick Home

125 South Lincoln Avenue

Located at 125 South Lincoln Avenue is an 1852 Greek Revival home bought in 1863 by John Burnham, partner to Dan Halladay. Halladay had done business with Van Nortwick, and presumably met Burnham through him. Halladay and Van Nortwick would become partners in the US Wind Engine and Pump Company, which would become one of the most successful windmill companies of the era. John Van Nortwick had already become successful as the developer of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, and his holdings also included the Batavia Flour Mill and the Batavia Paper Company. When he passed in 1890, he had become the wealthiest person in Kane County.
