Batavia Junior High School opened in 1966, with Sam Rotolo as its first principal. A beloved figure, Mr. Rotolo had begun his career as a Batavia educator in 1953 as a physical education teacher at Louise White School. Three years later, he was named principal, and three years after that he was named Batavia’s Citizen of the Year. In 1980, he was named Kane County Principal of the Year, and also given the Award for Excellent in Education for Outstanding School Administrators by the State Superintendent of Education. Mr. Rotolo served as principal of Batavia Junior High until his retirement in 1989, creating a very congenial and respectful environment. Fostering a safe, open and supportive environment was important to him, and both staff and students held him in high regard. In the 1990s, the current middle school was built, and was eventually given the name Sam Rotolo Middle School in honor of Mr. Rotolo’s memorable tenure and long-lasting impression as a kind and caring educator for all students in Batavia.
