Even before Batavia had its current name, it had a one-room schoolhouse, built in 1835. In 1846, if you lived on the west side of the river, you went to school at the church located at 16 North Batavia Ave. In 1852, a school was built where Bethany Lutheran Church is located today. In 1867, another school was built on the west side, which would become known as West Side School. It was torn down in 1950. The first high school serving the entire community was built at the corner of Batavia Avenue and Wilson Street — which was in use until the new school was built in 1966.
